C. Instruction Procedure/Activity Demo
1. DAY 1 - Fill out KWL chart on Animation
2. Discuss UEQ (How is movement created in both a real and abstract sense in Art?)
3. Discuss LEQ (What does "animation" mean?)
Using a small piece of paper, create a simple animated cartoon that really moves. Color neatly and solidly with colored pencils. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruZZf4Y3ljo
4. DAY 2 - Discuss LEQ (What is the difference between "foreground" and "background"?)
Show Animaniacs clip, pausing frequently and have the students describe which part of the scene is foreground and which is background: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HURMPtfNjLo
Show Disney clip so the students can see how traditional animated cartoons are made in studios:
http://www.openculture.com/2011/04/how_walt_disney_cartoons_are_made_.html
Show "One Crazy Summer" clip so the students can see people like them creating a traditional animated cartoon: http://youtu.be/0ab7x2yo1-I
Draw a simple scene with something in the foreground that is moving, and everything in the background not moving. No color is necessary. Use rulers and compasses to make the picture accurate. Talk about the history of animation, and how successive pictures give the illusion of movement. Go over 24fps, and have the students figure out how many drawings for 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes and 20 minutes.
5. DAY 3 - On a piece of acetate, trace the moving object in the foreground with a black Sharpie. Put F/L name at the bottom. Paint the BACK of the acetate.
6. DAY 4 - On a piece of copy paper, draw a background to go along with the acetate foreground picture. Neatly and solidly color it with colored pencils.
7. DAY 5 - Finish coloring background and tape the acetate foreground to it. Fill out wagon wheel graphic organizer which shows the different classes integrated into the animation lesson to be used as an exit ticket.
